But there’s a version of the island that most tourists never see, and that version doesn’t reveal itself from the window of a tour bus or the back seat of a taxi. It reveals itself when you’re behind the wheel of an ATV, with no fixed schedule and nowhere you absolutely have to be.

If I were visiting Santorini with a free day and no obligations, the first thing I’d do is head to Iakovos Rentals in Perivolos and pick up an ATV. Not because it’s the most practical choice — though it is — but because the island’s roads were practically designed for it. Narrow, winding, occasionally dramatic, and almost always rewarded with a view that makes you stop and just stand there for a minute.

Here are some of the routes worth exploring.

Perivolos to Akrotiri — The Southern Run

Starting from Perivolos, the road southwest toward Akrotiri is one of the most underrated drives on the island. You pass through Emporio, the largest traditional village in Santorini, with its medieval castle and labyrinth of covered pathways built specifically to confuse pirates. It’s worth stopping and walking around for half an hour before continuing.

From Emporio, the road climbs slightly and opens up toward Akrotiri, where the Minoan archaeological site sits quietly at the southwestern tip of the island. The site itself is extraordinary — a Bronze Age city preserved under volcanic ash, often called the “Greek Pompeii.” Admission is worth it. After the site, follow the road to the red beach and the lighthouse at the very edge of the caldera cliff. On an ATV, you can park where a car can’t, and you’ll be grateful for that.

Fira to Oia — The Caldera Road

This is the famous one, and it earns its reputation. The road from Fira north toward Oia follows the caldera rim closely enough that you’re rarely out of sight of the drop. There are pullouts along the way — use them. The villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli sit along this route and are quieter than both Fira and Oia, with the same views and half the crowds.

Oia itself is best visited either early morning or late afternoon. If you arrive by ATV, park at the entrance of the village — the streets inside are pedestrian only — and walk in. The windmills, the castle ruins, the blue domes — yes, it’s crowded, but it’s crowded for a reason.

The return trip along the same road in the late afternoon light is a different experience entirely. Worth doing both directions.

The East Coast — Kamari and Monolithos

Most visitors focus on the caldera side and ignore the east coast almost entirely. That’s a mistake. The road from Fira down to Kamari passes through Messaria and drops you onto a black sand beach that’s long, wide, and far more relaxed than anything on the western side of the island.

From Kamari, continue north along the coast to Monolithos, where the beach is even quieter and the tavernas are local rather than tourist-facing. The road between the two is flat and easy — good for a relaxed afternoon rather than an adventure, but the contrast with the caldera side is worth experiencing.

Mesa Gonia and the Vineyard Roads

Santorini’s wine culture is serious, and the vineyards cover a surprisingly large portion of the island’s interior. The roads through Mesa Gonia and toward Santo Wines and Venetsanos Winery wind between basket-trained vines — a cultivation method unique to the island, designed to protect grapes from the wind — and the landscape here feels completely different from the coastal routes.

Stop at one of the smaller, less famous wineries along the way. Assyrtiko straight from the source, with a view of the caldera in the distance, is one of those experiences that justifies the whole trip.

Practical Notes for ATV Riding on Santorini

A few things worth knowing before you head out. Santorini’s roads are generally well-maintained on the main routes but can get narrow and uneven on the smaller tracks. An ATV handles this better than a scooter and far better than a car. The Kymco MXU 450i and the Linhay 550cc available at Iakovos Rentals are both built for exactly this kind of terrain — stable, powerful enough for the climbs, and comfortable for two people.

Helmets are included. Start early if you’re doing the full caldera road — by 11am in peak season, Oia is already packed. Bring water. The island is small but the sun is not.

Santorini rewards the people who move through it at their own pace. An ATV is the most direct way to do exactly that.

Santorini is one of those places that looks almost too perfect from a distance — the postcards, the Instagram…

[1

post-1338","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
